STPM?

Monday, April 21, 2008

I have been doing a lot of research on STPM these days. I have been reading forums and articles about STPM for almost the 6 to 7 hours a day.
I wouldn't say I am fully prepared to go to Form 6, but I think I can understand the hardship of getting a good result at Form 6.

Most of them said that A levels is easier to score than form 6, and since it's of the same rank, it's a better option. That's is the reason why I am pretty tempted to go at first. But now, after having a thorough thinking, perhaps STPM isn't really that bad. It's hard, but if you can score, you get to prove yourself that you are good.

The problem about A levels for me is not just the fees. I can get a tuition fee waiver at most colleges too. But what about the fees after my A levels? Where am I suppose to get the money for undergraduate studies? Even if I score 4 As and manage to get an offer, I still can't further my studies without $$.

Plus, if I am aiming for NUS or NTU in the first place, STPM is actually a better choice and Singapore Universities seem to favour STPM over the A levels at Malaysia.

By the way, I just discovered that University of Sydney (world ranking : 33 = before NUS, and UM) actually accept Malaysian Matriculation (Matrikulasi)! Good News for those who are going. Though so, money is still an issue.. But if you are good enough to get an offer, I think you can get a scholarship pretty easily.. haha.

I think I will still appeal for the Matrikulasi as see what things turn out. If I can get, I might really go.

By the way, I will be attending an interview at FTMS college for the Star Scholarship. I sort of regret for submitting three copies of application forms. I applied for FTMS, Inti and Nottingham. The truth is, I only want Nottingham. Both 3 of it are 3+0 Computer Science related course. The interview I got was Software engineering. If I can do well in my foundation, then I can study the University East London undergraduate degree. (it's not in top 400 in world. But it's still better than nothing) . I will try my best for the interview but I think I am pretty tired of the whole interview process. I need to read up on FTMS college (no one seems to know about this college..) and also to prepare for some of the questions they might ask. (Tell me about yourself. What are your weaknesses? What is the achievement that you are most proud of? Why should we offer you the place? What do you know about our college?)

The worst interview I had was undoubtedly with Uniten. They are the sarcastic type and try and make you feel inferior. Perhaps they want to test how you react under stress. No hopes for getting that I think.

The best interview I had was with Khazanah. Actually it was the UEM college lecturers who interviewed me. I had a great time. But I guess they didn't. Otherwise I would have been shortlisted. (Many have gone for the second interview and I am still staying home.) No regrets, I guess. The others are simply too awesome. At the interview, I encounter a few people who applied for undergraduate scholarships. They are all top A levels or IB scholars. One of them got Economics from London School of Economics, the other got Law Degree from Cambridge University Trinity College, and another one got Economics from Stanford University. They already got the offer, but haven't got the scholarship. So they are applying to as many scholarships as possible. Scary geniuses. But their English is very very powerful. Their existence makes me feel small and insignificant. The one going to Cambridge Law was from Help University College, and he actually asked me not to go there if I am going to do A levels. He said that Taylors and UEM are better and said that KBU provide very cheap A level studies (which I already knew..).

I asked my brother about it and he said that gaining entry in Foreign University is way easier than securing a scholarship. This is because foreign universities want more foreign students so that they can get money. Unless we are talking about the Ivy Leagues in US where they will provide financial assistance for their student. But then again, they don't recognise STPM. haha.

so, wha's next? To be honest, I am not sure what I want. When I was in lower form, one of my favourite book was "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and I read a few books in that series including "Rich Kids, Smart Kids". I thought of becoming a business woman so badly. I subscribed to newsletters, read up about how to do internet networking, and how to do business online etc. For your information, I was only 14. When I was 16, I studied biology and became very interested in it. I dreamt of becoming a doctor. I am also deeply interested in pharmacy.

These few months, my ambition keeps changing. I thought of Engineering, Accountancy, Law, etc. I finally asked myself : what is the thing I enjoyed doing most?
The answer is definite. I like to sit infront of the computer for the whole day!
So, I came up with software engineering instead.

I don't know if my ambition will change. It just might.
Well, if I want to be an accountant, I can always do my CAT after STPM (though I will be a few years slower...). If I want to be doctor, I think I have to take biology for STPM loh. If I want to be lawyer, I can study anything during stpm (unless I want to go to UM, then I have to take sejarah, which is the last subject I want.)

Woah, I can type a lot. Probably it's because of this new keyboard I got from PC fair. The salesperson charged me extra RM3 for it (It stated 26 on the flyers, but he charged me 29. Only discovered it when I arrived home). It's suppose to be cheaper at PC fair and instead I got a more expensive deal. Haiz. I am bad at bargaining.

That's all.

bye!
